Luminism - The Horizon Series
An Expression of Luminism through Coloured Illumination.
Mid-20th-century art historians originally introduced ‘Luminism’ to describe a 19th-century American painting style.
“Luminist landscapes emphasise tranquillity and often depict calm, reflective water and soft, hazy majestic skies. Characterised by the effects of light in landscapes, it stresses the horizontal and demonstrates the artist's control of structure, tone, and light.”
HORIZONS is a series that redefines our perception of the world through the interplay of monochromatic photography and vibrant coloured illumination. These works provoke deep emotional responses, foster heightened awareness, and offer a rich, dynamic, intimate experience.
The series invites viewers on a contemplative and mindful journey by transforming familiar landscapes into vivid, illuminated scenes. The previously static photographs are animated through light, creating a harmonious blend of stillness and movement. This unique synergy, enhanced by the hypnotic effect of transparent colour, induces meditative stillness and provides a transformative encounter with radiating coloured light.
Each piece in the series is an opportunity to break free from the fast-paced world and fully engage with the intricate interplay of light and colour. It evokes a sense of tranquillity and introspection, making it a powerful expression of Luminism adapted to a contemporary context.
